Bonebakker offers a ravishing collection of rare, fancy diamonds. Fancy diamonds are also known as ‘fancy coloured diamonds’. That is because they are available in a range of colours. Some are rarer than others, but in general, single-colour diamonds are much rarer than their white counterparts. At Bonebakker, we love every opportunity we get to work with rare coloured gemstones. Fancy diamonds are a constant source of inspiration for us to create unique jewellery for you.
We invite you to come and see these rare beauties of Nature yourself in our exquisite jewellery salon at the Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium Hotel. We promise you will be enchanted, too!
Every diamond we use in our jewelry is selected by our expert staff. During our international travels, we select the most beautiful specimens. Only 1 in 10,000 one-carat cut diamonds has a colour that is beautiful enough to be used in our collection. The chance of finding a diamond with intense colour is therefore very rare.
During the formation of diamonds, certain factors within their structure can affect the colour, resulting in fancy colour diamonds with strong, vibrant colours. Blue, yellow, pink, and red diamonds are some of the most sought-after shades. For all fancy diamonds, the stronger the colour, the rarer the stone is.
Unlike the well-known brilliant, clear diamonds, it is precisely the color deviations in colored diamonds that make these diamonds so special. These diamonds have a unique way in which the light refracts through the stone and is absorbed. The value of a diamond with colour is determined by both the hue and the colour intensity. Although they come in many different colours, naturally colored diamonds with a high colour intensity are extremely exclusive. The authenticity of the colour in the diamonds is confirmed by certificates from well-known and independent gemological institutes, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
When cutting colored diamonds, the focus is on highlighting their colour, as opposed to emphasising brilliance, which is the main aim for colourless diamonds. Special cuts, called ‘fancy cuts’, help to better retain light and accentuate the natural colour. The right cutting ratio and ideal depth are very important for fancy diamonds. If the stone is too flat, the brilliant colour will fade. The rarity of the diamonds often makes it difficult to find exactly the color and shape you want, which makes them desirable gemstones.
